it seems like the choreographer wants to explore bringing his dance, his choreographic language, his own show into the vast realms of comedy. Realms that Petrillo easily uncovers in Cervantes' text, in all their incredibly fertile essence, and which he depicts in their extraordinary beauty.

Don Quijote’s madness is a sane kind of madness, driven by an inner impulse which warps reality, so great is the urge to change it. The “mad” knight shows the basic problem of life, that is the frustration that a man suffers when facing reality, which cancels out imagination, personal expectations, the realisation of a life project, the one man identifies with. It is therefore not difficult to picture us as him today. Eternal knights who every day fight the windmills of a decadent society.
The contemporary Don Quijote is a deluded, disappointed, deceived man and turns from an ironic and carefree dreamer to a tragic character, who, before declaring himself healed and reformed, so defeated, exclaims on his deathbed: “I was born to live dying”.
“Don’t die, señor mío, but take my advice and live many years, because the craziest thing a man can do is to let himself die just like that, without anyone killing him, nor any other hands finishing him off except those of melancholy.”
Those words addressed by Sancho Panza to his dying knight-errant have been the source of inspiration to Loris Petrillo for his new choreographic work Don Quijote.
The creation is an ode to resistance and courage, a call to get back on their own feet in order to fight the frustration suffered facing reality. The events of life have always forced man to continuous compromises, defeats, sorrows, but with a touch of idealism, each madman could be wiser than people might believe and discover against any appearance the true essence of life.
Throughout the personality of the characters of Cervantes’ masterpiece, Don Quixote, Sancho Panza and Ronzinante, the piece deals with the deepest issues of man life and doesn’t forget overlooking the grotesque and hilarious aspects which fortunately belong to them. The piece is similar to a parody as well as a work of great substance and, mainly, a symbolic journey in the depths of life.
